The author obtained, from the archives at Seville, Spain, copies of permits for the settlement of the Attakapas Country by Spanish immigrants, as well as copies of the correspondence between the Spanish officials, and particularly letters from Francisco Bouligny to Galvez.

They Tasted Bayou Water is a result of the writer's interest in the history of her home parish, an interest that was stirred early in life by tales of family and local history.
